Ndau FM brings community voice to Tamburikai village

By Artwell Chingwara Sithole

In the heart of Tamburikai village, a sense of pride and connection fills the air as residents gather to listen to their local community radio station, Ndau FM. For years, villagers had tuned into Mozambican radio stations, longing for a platform that spoke to their experiences and culture in their own language. Now, with Ndau FM on the airwaves, the community is finally getting the local content they’ve been craving.

The sound of laughter and chatter fills the evening air as villagers sit , listening intently to the radio. The once-neglected radios are now tuned in, bringing news, music, and stories that resonate with the community. Mr. Hlomani, a local resident, is enjoying the fresh wave of local content that Ndau FM brings to the table.
“It’s wonderful to finally have a radio station that speaks to us in our own language and shares our stories,” he says with a smile.

This development is part of a broader initiative by the government to open up the airwaves and give communities like Tamburikai a voice. According to Mr. Jonathan Gandari, Chief Director in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, the Second Republic has made a deliberate move to open up airwaves to enable access to information and full participation of citizens in national development.

“We will soon invite applications for more community radios, adding to the already existing 14 community radios,” Mr. Gandari revealed during a tour of Ndau FM community radio in Chipinge’s Garahwa village. Chipinge District is home to two community radios, namely Vemuganga FM and Ndau FM, both playing a vital role in promoting local content and community engagement.

For the people of Tamburikai village, Ndau FM is more than just a radio station – it’s a symbol of community pride and a reflection of their identity. As they continue to tune in and engage with the content, they’re reminded that their voices matter and that they have a platform to share their stories with the world.

Ndau FM’s impact extends beyond entertainment, providing a platform for community members to share their experiences, traditions, and concerns. By broadcasting in the local language, the radio station has become an integral part of the community’s daily life, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

As the government continues to support the growth of community radio stations, it’s clear that initiatives like Ndau FM will play a vital role in shaping the country’s media landscape and promoting community engagement
