Dr Chivhuno is master of Afro-fusion

Along the dusty tarmac roads of Gaza Township, the sound of competing pirate taxis dorminates the atmosphere each morning. The drivers will be jostling for passengers along busy routes. It is within this vibrant community that Dr Chivhuno, a humble yet remarkably prolific singer, has carved out his space.

The youthful artiste leads the Afro Son Band, bringing energy and direction to the group. His music recording journey began almost a decade ago in the Zimdancehall scene, but has since blossomed into a full-fledged Afro-fusion sound.

Born Gerald Mucheto 29 years ago, Dr Chivhuno is also a skilled mbira player, weaving the traditional instrument’s resonant tones into his contemporary compositions.

With over twenty songs to his name; a third of them already recorded, the artist is currently enjoying widespread acclaim with his latest single, “Nijo.” He fondly credits his grandmother for nurturing his talent from an early age.

“My grandmother served as a music instructor at various schools in Chipinge district. She brought the lessons home to me, and that early exposure inspired music to become a part of my life.

“While in Form 3 in Marondera, I coordinated a school choir which I also conducted. We performed during a visit by a government minister who got impressed with my antics that she paid for my Ordinary Level schooling expenses. I’m also deeply grateful to many others who have supported me along my musical journey,” he said.

Beyond music, Dr Chivhuno is a multi-talented creative. He founded Vivid Arts Initiative, a project through which he explores theatre (acting and dance). He is also directing Doc Media House where he does photography and film, rounding out a dynamic and ever-evolving artistic profile.
