Chimanimani, Chipinge to expect strong winds this weekend

RESIDENTS and visitors to Chimanimani and Chipinge are being warned to brace for strong winds expected to sweep across the two districts this Saturday, 5 September 2026. This alert has been issued by the Meteorological Services Department in collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection.

According to the advisory, which was released today, the change in weather conditions will take effect from Friday evening and is projected to last until Monday, 7 September.

The advisory warns of a risk of lightning in Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, and Bulawayo Metropolitan. The districts of Chipinge, Chiredzi, Chimanimani, and Nyanga are expected to experience cloudy and cold conditions on Saturday, with light rain or drizzle possible in some areas.

Although the warning level has been classified as minimal, meaning widespread destruction is not anticipated, the likelihood of the strong winds occurring is considered high. As a result, authorities are urging the public to take precautionary measures to protect life and property. Residents are advised to secure loose objects such as roofing sheets, outdoor furniture, and any lightweight materials that could be blown away by the wind.

Members of the public are also encouraged to remain indoors once the winds and lightning commence, and to avoid taking shelter under trees or electric poles during thunderstorms, as this poses a significant safety risk. Motorists are being reminded to exercise extra caution on the roads, as strong winds can severely reduce visibility and make driving hazardous, particularly on highways and in open, exposed areas.

The Meteorological Services Department and the Department of Civil Protection have confirmed that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed by tuning in to local radio stations and following official social media channels for the latest weather alerts and safety guidance.
