The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) is set to champion agroecology at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

AFSA’s 15-member delegation, representing ten African countries, will advocate for agroecology as a just and transformative approach to addressing the climate crisis.

Key advocacy priorities include (i) Global Goal on Adaptation: Centering on small-scale food producers and Indigenous communities, (ii) National Adaptation Plans (NAPs): Integrating agroecology for vulnerable communities, (iii) Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs): Including agroecology for emission reduction and (iv) Climate Finance: Increasing grants-based finance for agroecological approaches.

Sena Alouka, Chair of AFSA’s Climate and Agroecology Working Group, said, “We need funding commitments supporting small-scale farmers and Indigenous communities for a just transition to agroecology.”

Dr. Million Belay, AFSA General Coordinator, added, “Agroecology offers a transformative solution reshaping food systems, protecting biodiversity, and securing resilient livelihoods.”
