Stop using unskilled electricians, ZERA warns property owners

Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has issued a strong warning to the public, urging them to stop hiring unqualified individuals for electrical wiring in their properties, especially homes. The advice was delivered during a Media Engagement Workshop held in Mutare on September 29, 2025.
Presenting on the topic of electricity safety, Regional Operations Manager, Engineer Keith Chikomo, revealed that a significant number of electrical fires are directly caused by substandard work from unskilled handymen.
“It is unfortunate that most people prefer to have their electrical wiring done by themselves or unskilled personnel to cut costs. This has contributed to the many electrical fire accidents that are taking place in households.”
He warned that this practice is not just dangerous but also illegal.
“I advise people that it is a crime to do that. I would like everyone to know that legislation says both the contracting and the contracted parties can be prosecuted for that offence,” he explained.
The authority advises homeowners to always hire certified and qualified electricians to ensure the safety of their properties and families.
